BOOK LAUNCH: THE HANGING OF ANGÉLIQUE
By Afua Cooper
Harper Collins Publishers, 2006

The Alfie Roberts Institute presented the Montreal launch of The Hanging of Angelique: The Untold Story of Canadian Slavery and the Burning of Old Montreal. The Hanging of Angélique is the result of years of research by Afua Cooper, originally from Jamaica, who teaches history at the University of Toronto. The book seamlessly weaves together the story of Marie Angélique's life, a Black slave who was hanged in 1734 after being convicted of burning down the better part of Montreal in an attempt to escape her bondage. Afua Cooper is also a celebrated poet and her thoroughly documented account of the life of Angélique and slavery in Canada marries a keen researcher's eye with the literary pen of a creative storyteller. The result is a genuine, and long-awaited classic in African-Canadian and Canadian history, a milestone which brings Canadian slavery and our struggle to humanize our existence in this society to the forefront of our country's history.

At the Paragraph Bookstore in Montreal Afua Cooper spoke about the story of Angélique signed copies of the books.
